Sounds too good to be true? Of course not!

I remember the first parties I threw…Wow! I was totally overwhelmed! I was trying to do too much…only because I thought EVERYTHING had to be perfect…

I was so wrong!!

Of course, there are a lot of things to look after, BUT I now keep things very simple…

And I host parties the So Perfectly Simple way!!

Curious? 🙂 Let me explain…

In this post, we will talk about the 12 essential things to focus on when throwing a party. The 12 things I wish I had known before…Apply these and believe me, you will never be stressed out about a party!

So, what are those essential things?  It’s time to talk about them!!

There is a lot of info here, so, make sure you save it so you can refer to it later 😉

Ok now! Time to dive into the real thing!!

Best party…12 things you wish you knew!

#1-Inviting the right people!

How important this is! Invite people that will blend well together!

I know how fun it is to throw a huge party with tons of people… but if your guests don’t like each other or have nothing in common, well… the party will never pick up! Or worst, a battle could start! ( I have in mind a memorable Super Bowl party… mmm…)

So, better have a small party than end up with no party at all!!

And having people happy to see each other will generate a great party! 😉

#2-Special theme or occasion…

How fun it is to have a particular theme for our party! And now, imagine how uncomfortable your guests would be if they were not adequately dressed for the occasion!

You certainly don’t want your guests to feel uncomfortable, don’t you?

So please, let them know about that particular theme…before! You can include it in the invitation, call them, or send them a quick email as long as they know how to dress.

Same for a surprise party. You have to tell them it’s a surprise. Otherwise, it might not be a surprise at all!

They also need to know if you have decided to offer a group gift… they will be glad to participate too.

And, of course, they have to know in advance if they have to bring their own drinks or a dish for the potluck. 😉 Potlucks are a fabulous way to host without stress! I just love them! I won’t talk too much about potlucks here because it’s not our main topic, but I have a whole post about them!

#3-The music…

best party...12 things you wish you knew:the music

The number one thing to any party!! But never forget that music is for ambiance.

Unless all your guests like the same music, try to offer a large variety. A bit of everything should be on your playlist so all can appreciate it.

How about the sound level? Well, it should not be too high and not too low… you know, your guests should be able to chat; you surely don’t want them to yield all night!

…Of course, it’s a little different if you have a dance floor! 😉 You might need to pump up the volume a bit…

#4-The lights…

Lights are also a great way to create the perfect ambiance. Dim the lights and add a few candles here and there ( if you feel it is safe enough! ).

Let the lights on in each room you’ll use, but turn them off where you don’t want anyone… I hate having people everywhere, even if they’re friends.

#5-Keep things simple!

The more simple, the better! If only I had learned that earlier!! 😊

I mean that EVERYTHING has to be simple! The buffet, the bar, the decor, the theme…

The more complicated things are, the more stressful it will be. Which is not the goal, right? Who wants a stressful party? Better enjoying that party with our friends!

So, my best advice? Don’t try to do too much! No worries, your guests will be happy anyway!

#6-Food & drinks…

the best parties,12 things you whish you knew!Again, the key is to Keep. It. Simple!

A few sandwich trays, nachos, veggies & dip, or even pizza will be perfect!

Of course, you can offer a simple buffet too… as long as you have time to make it. 😉 I propose a very simple buffet right here; easy to make, easy to serve, and, more important! Easy to eat! It should inspire you…

But on the other hand, some of our most memorable parties ended by ordering pizzas for everyone! It always depends on who you invite…

Let’s now talk about the drinks…

I now feel very comfortable asking my friends to bring their own! I used to be shy, but I realized with time that some of my ”friends” were taking advantage of it! We all know how expensive alcohol is!

Of course, I always have a bottle of wine ( or two! 😊) and a few beers. For bigger crowds, I like to serve a punch. I find that a punch bowl is so festive!… but also much easier to manage!! These 25 punch recipes will inspire you for sure!

I usually provide soft drinks, ice cubes, tonic water or juice, and coffee. It’s more than enough to please everyone.

I sometimes do a special cocktail table, again, depending on my guests. I provide everything we need to create one or two cocktails. BUT I don’t make them! It has to be a self-serve bar, or you will play the bartender all evening long… believe me, you have better things to do!!

#7-House cleaning…

I used to do extensive deep cleaning just before my party to ensure that everything was nice and neat for my guests… But I quickly realized that it was a waste of time and energy!  Imagine your house after the party… right, it doesn’t show anymore!

So now, I do a nice clean up a few days before… and my big deep clean up after my party! 😉

But I always check on the washroom a few times during the evening to make sure everything is ok; bathroom tissue, hand towels, and soap…

#8-Your Guests!

The main thing I realized over the years is that no matter what kind of party you plan, as long as you take good care of your guests and make them feel special, they will be happy and enjoy your party.

Take the time to chat with them, and show them that you are happy to spend some time with them. After all, the main reason you throw this party is to connect with your friends! So, never forget that.

And as long as you take well care of them, no one will complain about the food, the decor, or anything else!

#9-Help…

My best, best advice? Say YES every time someone offers help!  Ha! ha! You absolutely don’t need to handle everything on your own!

And we usually have so much fun in the kitchen doing dishes! Some of my best parties ended in the kitchen doing dishes… how fun it was! Ok, I sometimes had to wash everything a second time the next day, but the worst was done 😉

Same thing if your friends offer to bring food… Say YES to everything!! ( ha! ha! You will thank me for this later! )

#10-Enjoy!

You have to enjoy that evening too! So, instead of spending your day running everywhere, make sure you take the time to rest.

Try to make ahead as most as possible, or if you have no time, feel free to order snacks from a caterer! The main thing here is to have time for yourself before your guests show up!

#11-When it’s over…

the best parties...12 things you wish you knewWhen it’s over, well, it’s over!

We all have friends that never realize that the party is over!

The trick is to stop serving drinks and propose coffee instead. You could also gradually increase the intensity of the lights and reduce the sound level…or turn it off completely!

And if they still don’t get it, well, let them know that you are tired and that it’s time to leave. Please don’t be shy to do so, or they will never leave! But remember to stay polite! 😊 We can say everything with a smile…

#12 …Money…

Hosting a party can cost a lot.

I remember that a few of my ”friends” were always the first to accept the invitation, but they never threw any party.

What did I do? I simply stopped inviting them! They were not real friends anyway!

Your real friends will always offer to bring something or invite you as often as you do. Not that I’m judging here, but you know what I mean!

And please, stop being shy to ask them to share the costs with you. After all, you use your house and do all the work! Of course, I’m not talking about a cover charge, but you know, you can ask them to bring some food or drinks. That would spread the cost a little!

Also, feel free to offer only chips and pretzels! Having a beer with your friends on game night doesn’t have to turn into a full dinner every time! A few snacks would be just ok and won’t cost you much.

Remember that no one is expecting more… so keep things simple!
