So, Why Should You Start Blogging Over 50?

Aren’t you tired of all those perfect-blond-hair smiley “young” women we see everywhere on social media and Youtube channels?

Are they the only ones having something to say?!

Of Course Not!!

I dream of the day that we’ll see as many women of our age as 30 years old on social media!

So, get out your bikinis, girls, it’s time to be heard!… mmm… ok, I have no bikini, but you know what I mean! ha! ha!

What I really mean is it’s time for a change!

We definitely need more content for us, but more importantly, we need more content written BY US!!

So, if you’re thinking about starting over at 50 ( or 55, or 65…), then start a blog!

Oh yes, you will have fun! 😉And did you know blogging is a good way to make money too? Sounds great, right? We’ll discuss that later…

Just imagine…

Just imagine how many mid-aged women feel just like us…

Is a 32-year-old girl can talk about how we feel at 57 or 68? I don’t think so!

But YOU Can!!

It’s time to say what we have to say and say it loud!

Start a new life!

Almost all of my non-retired friends are tired of working boring 9-to-5 jobs. Some also feel unappreciated, while others are just looking for a new challenge. They all want to start over, but most are scared. I can understand because I’m afraid of it too!

How to start a blog at 50+…Before we jump into our topic…

Yes, a blog is a website. But to me, it’s more than a site. I see it like a magazine, newspaper… or a never-ending story! You keep adding to it day after day, every time you have something to write about! ( I mean, something important! )

Can I start a blog for free? This is a question I’m frequently asked… To tell you the truth, I don’t know how to start a blog for free…

Even though starting your blog doesn’t cost much, I don’t think you can start it without spending a few dollars (especially if you plan to make money with it).

But think of it this way: where else could you start your own business with such a tiny investment?

The Steps To Start Your Successful Blog

How to Start a Blog at 50+… Pick Your Blog Niche

That means choosing a category for your blog. Of course, you can choose more than one topic but try to focus on related topics.

First, make a list of the following:

  • What you like
  • What you could talk about for hours!
  • What you are good at…
  • What others always ask you for advice

Most importantly, choose a topic that will offer many post ideas!

I have an article here to help you choose; over 75 blog niches and topics ideas to inspire you

*If you plan to monetize your blog, keep in mind that some blogging niches tend to do a little better than others.

There are a few ways to make a little money from your blog. I won’t talk about it here because it’s not the subject of this post, but I explain how to monetize your blog in this article. Feel free to read it if making extra money appeals to you. 😉

Remember that no matter your chosen niche, you have to Love, Love it!

If not, you will quickly get bored, and finding new topics to write about will be hard!

Set Up Your Successful Blog

Here we’ll talk about all the technical stuff you need to set up your blog the right way.

I know! It looks a bit scary but believe me, it really is not as bad as it looks!

If I was able to do it, so can you!… Those who know me know how poor my tech skills were! ha! ha!

But I’m getting better and better, which is another reason to be proud of myself. 😉

1-Pick your Domain Name

Or your website’s name… Yes, I know! There are so many new words to learn!… And the more you learn, the more there is to learn! ha! Ha!

(Remember? Blogging is a never-ending story! 😉)

But guess what?  I wrote an article to help you a little! So, as a blogger-to-be or a New Blogger, You Will Love to Know these Blogging Terms!

I wish I could find the meaning of all these blogging terms before!

Why spend hours and hours online to find answers when you have them all here?!

Ok, now, let’s get back to your domain name!

Choose a name that will well describe your blog or a name that defines you well. Of course, it has to be simple and easy to remember if you want your readers to remember about it! 😉

*I suggest you make a small list of blog names, just in case… I will explain why a bit later.

2-Choose a blogging platform

Now time to choose the software (or service) you will use to publish your content online. It will allow you to manage all the posts and pages you create.

Of course, some are free, but you need to know that you won’t be able to make money from your blog with a free version.

And even worse, with a free service, you won’t own your blog or website content! Plus, you won’t be able to customize your blog ( or so little 🙁). On top of that, they will add all sorts of ads to your site without asking or telling you… absolutely no benefit for you here!!

So, I highly recommend that your website be self-hosted on a web server. Especially if you plan to make a little ( or a lot! ha! ha! ) of money with it. You’ll be the one deciding on everything, plus you’ll be able to customize it the way you want.

How To Start A Blog At 50+…

Choose a Website platform & Web Hosting

3-Website Platform & Web Hosting

I personally use WordPress.org for So Perfectly Simple, and I love it.

**WordPress is the most popular website platform in the world. It powers around 40% of all the websites on Earth! That means something, right?

And it’s totally free!!  Yay!!

But of course, you will have to host your files on a server. And as I mentioned earlier, if you want to monetize and control your blog, you must pay for hosting.

I did a little research when I started, and it quickly became clear to my mind that Bluehost was the best for me ( and for you, too, I’m sure! )

While web hosting can cost $100 a month or more, Bluehost is very affordable.

It will cost you as low as $2.95 a month for the 36-month package 😉

BlueHost is the #1 recommended web hosting company by WordPress

→It’s also the best affordable hosting for beginner bloggers

→They give you a FREE Domain Name when you buy at least a 12-month plan

→ They also have a fabulous support team to help you any time!

What more can we ask?

So, Ready To Start? 😊

how to start a blog at 50; ready to set up your blog

How to start a blog at 50+…Where the fun begins!!

1- Click here to head over to Bluehost and select your plan.

Visit the Bluehost website here.  Then hit the blue “Get Started” button to choose your package ( *remember that it’s only $2.95 US a month if you sign up for 36 months )

You will be redirected to the “Select the type of plan” page, where you choose the plan you want to purchase. As a new blogger, the Basic Plan is all you need to get started ( you can upgrade anytime if you need to ).

2-Time to pick your Domain Name

( Pretty exciting, isn’t it? 😉) Again, I suggest you make a small list before in case the name you chose is unavailable ( there are zillions of websites out there, so it happens…)

The name I chose at first was So Simple, but it wasn’t available.

So, after a few tries, I opted for So Perfectly Simple… and it turns out Perfectly Fine!!

**If you’re not sure yet about your Domain Name, no worries! You can skip this step for now and click on “I’ll Create My  Domain Later” at the bottom of the page.

Once you’re ready, all you need to do is enter the Domain Name you picked ( mine was finally So Perfectly Simple ).

3-Create your Bluehost account

As easy as 1-2-3!

Fill in your account details. Make sure you give your most updated email address because billing and login info will be sent to this address, so it better be the right one!!

*You can also connect your Google account to BlueHost to make it even easier!

4-Which pricing plan should you choose?

  • Like everywhere else, the bigger, the cheaper! ha! ha!  I highly recommend that you buy at least a 12-month plan because:
  • You will get your Domaine Name for FREE
  • If you only purchase a monthly plan, you might forget to renew, bringing your site down and losing your business! Imagine all that hard work lost! Not for me!!  No! No!!
  • With a 12-month or more plan, the monthly price will be cheaper
  • If you want a successful blog, you will need at least one year, right? 😊 and because you will put all your heart into your blog, you better take the 36-month plan and save money!  ** Think of it this way; 10 cents a day to run your own business… what other business could you start for 10 cents a day?! **
  • Things are going really fast at the beginning, and you want to be sure that your site is in good hands and not have to worry about it. Peace of mind is priceless!

Is Domain Privacy Protection necessary?

For you to choose, but…

If you don’t want to spend too much here, uncheck any extra add-ons. BUT, I strongly recommend paying for Domain Privacy + Protection… only $0.99 a month to keep your details private!

Any info you add becomes visible to anyone on the internet. If you don’t pay for that Domain Privacy + Protection, all your personal contact info could be used by marketers or worse! Spammers!! That’s why I suggest you pay for it; peace of mind has no price to me! And it is undoubtedly worth that extra dollar a month!… but again, up to you to choose 🙂

5- Install WordPress

You won’t believe how easy it is!

Actually, Bluehost does all the work for you!

So, nothing to do here but choose your password!

*Remember that the Bluehost tech support team is there to assist you at any moment. Simply open the Live Chat and write your question.

freebies to help you start a blog in your 50s

Still there? Well, you better be, because…

Guess What?

Your blog is almost set up and ready to go! Yay!! Time to pat you on the back! And make a little happy dance!

It wasn’t that bad, right? 🙂

6-Choosing your Theme

Now that WordPress is installed and you have chosen your password, Bluehost will give you the option to select a theme. (The theme is the foundation, the look of your website, and there are many to choose from).

Here you can choose a theme or wait a little while and click “Skip This Step” right after the offered themes.

Pick a theme that inspires you, but most importantly, choose a theme that is light so it won’t slow your site down.

You also want to select a theme that is easy to customize…and a free one is even better!! ha! ha!

For all these reasons, I strongly recommend the Astra theme.

That’s the theme I chose, and I still love it. It’s very easy to tweak and customize.

The Astra Team is the best support team ever!!

how to start a blog at 50+? you need a good support team

But the most important thing is; The Astra Support Team is incredible. You can reach out to them for absolutely any question ( which I have done a thousand times! ), and they are always there to help.

Their goal is your satisfaction and success, and we clearly see they care… 😊 I mean, really care!

*I suggest you opt for the free Astra theme for now and upgrade to the paid version later. That’s what I did, and I never regretted my choice.

Once your theme is chosen, simply hit the “Start Building” button; you’ll be automatically redirected to WordPress.

And what you’ll see on your screen is your WordPress Dashboard… believe me, you will spend time there! Better get familiar with it! 😉

But trust me, it’s pretty easy to use, and you will learn it in no time!

I suggest you bookmark that Dashboard page because you will work on it probably more than you think! Remember my warning about addiction? ha! ha!

**Note: It might take 24 to 48 hours before you can log in to WordPress. They need that time to assign your domain and redirect your website to the right web address…

But no worries! 😉 You’ll be able to access your website by logging in to your Bluehost account: https://my.bluehost.com/  and clicking on “Login To WordPress.”

You will now be logged into the WordPress Dashboard! And Tada!!   ha! ha! Almost too easy

-6.5 More about your theme

Of course, you want a beautiful website; we all do!

But my best advice is to Keep It Simple!

Your theme has to be:

  • Easy to read
  • Easy to navigate
  • Mobile-Friendly
  • Compatible with many browsers, such as Safari, Chrome, or Firefox
  • Optimized for SEO
  • And lastly, you must have a support team to help you

Don’t worry if your website doesn’t look exactly how you would like it to look at first; you can improve it whenever you want later. Better put your time and energy into other things for now.

How to start a blog at 50+… Good Advice…

The only important thing, for now, is to start your blog! I remember wasting so much time reading and trying to make everything perfect… I realized after that everything is easier to learn AFTER starting your blog. You can immediately improve what you just learned or do research for one specific topic that you need to improve instead of reading EVERYTHING at the same time!

Never forget that people are not visiting your website for the look of it; they are visiting your site for what you have to share. The success of any website is the great content you will post! You will have readers as long as they feel they can learn from you.

And if you’re unhappy about the theme you choose, you could easily change it later. WordPress makes it very easy for us 😊

** Same with your logo! Why pay a marketing company when you can create it in Canva… for free!!

How To Start A Blog At 50+…

How to customize your successful blog

You now know almost everything about How To Start a Blog at 50+…

…but there is a bit more!

7-Customize your blog

Now that you have chosen your theme, it’s time to customize it! 🙂 Time to add your colors to your blog!

How to customize your blog

Select Appearance → and then Customize on the left of your screen.

The customizing options will appear on the left, and your blog will show on the right in real time. And, of course, you’ll see all the changes you make right here.

So, let’s go through these customizing options:

→Site Identity:

Where you can change the name and tagline of your blog.

→Colors:

Here you’ll choose all the colors for your website. Make sure you select an easy-to-read color for your fonts but also for your links. I can’t tell how important links are! So make sure people will see them at first sight.

→Header image:

This is where you add your logo and your site’s main image ( if you have one! ). There could be other settings too, depending on your theme.

**Make sure you add your logo in your footing too 😉

→Menus:

I work with Astra, but depending on your theme, you might have different options.  So, this menu section is where you’ll choose how and where you want to display your menu. I suggest you add it in your header and your footer as well. It’s also nice to display it in your sidebar if your theme allows it.

→Widgets:

These are elements you can use to add text, links, or any other type of information to your website’s sidebar or to other specific areas. These areas might be different, depending on your theme.

→Additional CSS:

Unless you are an expert in coding, you will probably never use this! ha! ha! But know that you can add some CSS styling here.

As you know, I’m not an expert in coding… and very far to be one! I have never used this function, so I don’t have much to say about it…

How To Start A Blog At 50+…

Setting up Pages and Categories

8-Time to Set up your Pages & Categories

It’s now time to work on the core of your blog.

There are important pages to build before you start writing posts. Of course, you’ll be able to come back to them later and make changes, but I suggest you take a few minutes to figure out a good structure for your blog.

Remember that it must be easy to navigate for your readers… You want them to stay on your blog as long as possible! 😊

These pages are static and will remain on your blog menu all the time. They won’t move or change unless you make the changes.

The three important pages you need at the beginning are:

  • Terms and Policy page
  • About me page
  • Contact page

These pages are very easy to create!

From the left menu, Select PagesAdd New

how to create your blog pages

A new page will open.

Add your title in the title box, and then start typing your text. I suggest you hit the “Save Draft” button from time to time to ensure you won’t lose your content. 😉

When you’re happy about the text and look of the page, simply hit the “Publish” button and VOILÀ!  Congrats! Your first page is now published and live on the web!!

Do the same with each page you need to build. All these pages will make your website looks even more real 😊

*Note: You can also copy and paste the text from Google Docs or Word

-Setting up Privacy Policy, Disclaimer, and Terms & Conditions

Make sure your blog is legal!

As soon as you install the plugin Google Analytics (which I highly recommend!) or start promoting products through affiliate links, you will collect some type of information from your readers ( cookies and/or other settings ).

You must inform your readers what type of info you’re collecting or that you are making money from the links you share on your blog.

Every website needs to have these three legal pages: Privacy Policy, Disclaimer, and Terms & Conditions.

You don’t need to have three separate pages. All of these can be on one single page as long as everything is clear.

A Privacy Policy is a statement on behalf of an organization or entity outlining how they use customer or client data they collect online. It establishes the organization’s practices regarding collecting, using, disclosing, protecting, and managing personal information.

How to set up your Privacy Policy page:

Again, WordPress makes it very easy to set up a Privacy Policy page.

From the left sidebar, select Settings → Privacy, then select “Create A New Page.” WordPress has a link to a very helpful guide that will tell you exactly what you need on your Privacy Policy page.

You can also find many Privacy Policy generators on the web for free.

**  **  **

How to set up your Disclaimer page:

A blog disclaimer explains that others should not rely on the information on your blog and that you cannot be held legally responsible for anything you publish on your blog.

In other words, a disclaimer protects you from lawsuits. By having a disclaimer, you disclaim or deny liability for the content you publish.

Of course, you will have to tailor your disclaimer according to your niche. For example, if you’re blogging about nutrition or healthy food, people have to clearly understand that your posts shouldn’t be taken as medical or health advice.

Same if you blog about finances; you need to say that people shouldn’t rely on your financial information.

You have to ensure that your disclaimer is clearly written and easy to understand.

Here is a great place to find ideas to help you build a disclaimer page for your blog

**  **  **

How to set up your Terms & Conditions:

Terms & conditions will help your readers understand what they should expect from your blog.

This agreement is kind of a how-to guide for the use of your website. It covers topics like sharing intellectual property and use restrictions and protects you from liability.

No matter what you blog about, you should consider having one, even if you don’t make money from blogging.

It will also protect your work and tell people that copyrights cover your content. It’s also the place where you can share info about how you monetize your blog and disclosures about your affiliates.

*You will also find Terms & Conditions templates on line 😉

Now time to talk about you! … Well, kind of!…

-How to build your contact page:

Your contact page is what the name says, ha! ha! It’s a contact page!

On this page, you should have all the information to reach you.

Your email address, of course, but if you offer any kind of services, it’s a good place to add a contact form so your clients can reach you easily.

How to start a blog at 50+, now time to talk about you!

How to Start a Blog at 50+…Your About Me page!

Finally! A page about you! Well… kind of! 🙂

Because an About Me page isn’t really about you, it’s more about what You will do to help your readers.

Yes, you will have to talk a bit about yourself, but it’s not a 2000 words biography!

People that read your posts might like to know a little more about you, but what they’re really looking for is what you can do for them and how you’ll be able to do it.

What’s in there for them? Why should they listen to you?

Those who will land on this page have to feel they can rely on you to solve a problem or that you know and understand how they feel. Let them know what your achievements are. Tell your story ( briefly! ) only if you think it will help your readers.

Write with a positive voice and tone, so they feel welcome. You want your readers to fall in love with you 😉

Hold on; we are almost done!!

Just a few steps to go before creating your first post! 😊

10-Categories:

Setting up categories will help organize your blog and make it easier for your readers to find the right information.

Your blog post categories are the main topics you will talk about. They will show in your blog’s menu ( more on that in a second! ).

As I mentioned earlier, try to keep things simple and easy. You should have at most 3 to 4 main categories on your blog to ensure everything is clear and, again, easy for your readers.

If you have more topics, then I suggest you create subcategories by using the “Parent Category.”

Let’s say you are a food blogger and share all kinds of recipes, but you also talk about restaurants, healthy food, and nutrition tips.

You can’t have a category for desserts, main-course, appetizers, etc. Instead, you will have a Parent Category called Recipes, and you will regroup all the recipes there. So if a reader is looking for a recipe, he will select the Recipes button from your menu and see only what he wants to see.

Your readers’ experience is the main thing, and you should focus on that every time you take an action on your blog.

How to start a blog at 50+…  Create A New Category

Now, to create a new category, simply go under PostCategories from the left sidebar menu.

Add the category name into the name box.

You’ll also see a Slug box. The slug is the URL of that specific category. Choose something simple, so it’s easy to remember. For example, the slug of your recipes’ category could be recipes. As easy as this! 😉

Write a short description of what that particular category is about. Some themes will display it while others won’t… but is it really necessary? You can always check your theme settings and try to add it if you want.

If you want a category to be a “subcategory,” simply choose a “Parent Category” from the parent category box.

After you have filled in all the boxes, click on the “Add New Category” button. And VOILÀ! You now have a category on your blog!! Yay!!

Do the same for each new category you want to add.

How To Start A Blog At 50+…

Building your website’s menu

11-Let’s talk about your website’s menu

Just so you know, most people will land on your website through a search engine like Google or social media like Facebook, Pinterest, or Instagram. Of course, they will land on a specific post, and most will move on and click away…

But you don’t want them to leave your blog! You want them to stay here as long as possible!! Your job is to make it easy for them to find your fabulous content!

This is why your menu is so important. It’s how people will find your content. So make sure your menu is clear and uncluttered. It should also be easy to get to and easy to navigate.

Because your theme will dictate the look of your menu, make sure you choose one with a very easy-to-use menu. You don’t want your readers to struggle to find your content, right?

Now that you have created all the essential pages of your blog, creating your menu in WordPress is very easy.

From the left-hand sidebar, go to AppearanceMenus. In a few clicks, you’ll be able to add your pages and categories to your menu.

how to start a blog at 50, how to create your menu

Your pages will usually show in the order you added them, but you can always tweak and drag a little until you’re happy with the result. Hit the Add To Menu Button, and there you go!! Your blog Menu is alive!! Yay!!

Note: I suggest you display your menu in the Header section and the Footer section of your website.

How To Start A Blog At 50+…

Writing your first post!

12-Time to write your first post!

See? You made it!! Congrats!! 🎉

You are now ready to write your first post!! The moment you were dreaming of!

In a second or two, you will be a Blogger!! 😊

How exciting!! I remember that moment; I was so, so proud!!

Just like any other pages and categories, you will look at the left sidebar and select PostAdd New

Add your title in the title box; this will be your SEO title. The title of your post could be a bit different if you want to. I won’t talk too much about SEO here because it’s not our main topic, but I suggest you learn SEO as soon as possible.

SEO will help your posts rank better on Google so that more people will hear about them. It would be sad to write all that fabulous content and have no one to read it! And if you plan to monetize your blog, you need a lot of visitors!

A good On-Page SEO is the key to success!

If you are willing to learn about SEO (which I strongly recommend! ), I suggest this incredible book! Believe me, after reading this book, you will become an SEO expert! 😉I know that you have many things to focus on for now, but using a good SEO strategy right from the start will save you time and energy… I wish I had realized that before…

I bought Debbie Gardner’s books; Easy On-Page SEO and Easy Backlinks. These are 2 fabulous books! Debbie explains SEO like no one. I learned everything I needed to know about SEO! I wasted so much time reading everything I could find on that topic. Gush! I wish I had discovered this book before instead of wasting all that precious time!

If you are serious about your blog ( and we all are, aren’t we?! 😉),  make yourself a gift, and invest in these e-books right from the start! You can buy them separately or buy the bundle to save a little. The bundle Easy On-Page SEO + Easy Backlinks; trust me, you won’t regret it!

Ok, stop talking about SEO; let’s return to your first post!!

Right under the Add Title box, you’ll see a big white box. This is where you type your text.

Use H1 for the title and H2 and H3 for your section’s title.

Make your text easy to read with short sentences and short paragraphs. Add lovely images to keep your readers attention.

Write your blog articles as if you were talking to a friend.

I know it’s not always easy to find your voice but believe me, you will quickly find it 🙂. You probably noticed that English is not my first language, and I had to learn that, too ( thank you to Grammarly and DeepL Pro! ). You can imagine that finding my voice wasn’t easy, but I made it! Which makes me very proud! I’m sure it will be easier for you!

*Note: Take a look in your niche to find some articles related to your topic. This will give you an idea of the length of the post you should write.

Feel free to use my Simple Blog Plan to help you write your posts and help you build your Blogging Calendar… Because having a plan will make things so much easier!! I have been using this plan since the very beginning, and it has always worked well for me. Of course, I tweaked it a little down the road, and I added a few things to it, but no doubt, it is my favorite blogging tool! Worksheets, lists, checklists, monthly calendar… everything I need to stay organized and help me out on my blogging journey 😉

my simple blog planner

P.S. If you haven’t started your blog yet and think you might need a bit more help, I recommend my guru Ling’s e-book. I call her my guru because I probably started my blog because of her. She has a unique way of explaining things, so everything seems easy and simple. And you now know that I prefer to buy a book instead of wasting my precious time doing tons of research! ha!ha! ( not that I’m lazy, but… )

The Treasure Map To Blogging is a step-by-step guide to creating your blog from A to Z. It’s the guide I followed, and because it helped me so much, I’m always happy to talk about it. Thank you so much, Ling!
